Hi, Everyone: I want to apologize for sending email. Computer has
fixed itself. System sound has returned, because I stopped clicking, I
guess. That's the magic of email, eh? :)

Thanks, Steve. I have a Dell Optiplex, not sure of model #, that turns
on and off, but nothing happens. It's got a hard drive in it. I think
I have to treat the hard drive as a blank drive that needs to have a
boot disk, or rescue disk to format it and load grub or something. How
do the experts go about checking a computer to see what is needed?
Could there be some software I can load on a thumb drive and try booting
from a thumb drive? Since nothing happens, it would have to be
completely independent of the computer system hardware, right?

I would double check the hardware first. Take off everything from the motherboard, drive cables, memory, expansion cards, etc... Then try to
power it up. It should beep because of the missing memory. Then add pieces back on, one at a time, until you stop getting errors and start
getting your "nothing" response. Just basic problem solving skills. Do a small change and check for a different result, if the result is good
do another change, if it's bad then you probably found the issue, if there's no change then undo what you did and change something else.

I've seen systems behave the same due to faulty hardware. Sometimes the problem is not where you'd expect. I have a CDRW drive that if you
plug in the IDE and power, the system will power on, but the bios won't initialize. I've tried it in several systems, always the same issue.

Thanks, Chris. Excellent information for a beginner. I've been under
the impression I would always have to buy stuff to troubleshoot. In
fact, if I understand you correctly, that's what Linux kernel basically
does at one level each time I start my computer. This exercise may not
increase my grasp of computer concepts, but will certainly help me hone
my skills in starting and stopping my computer. :)
